Performing a Michigan driver’s license renewal is a simple process but one that comes with a variety of methods and requirements. Generally, you can renew a driver’s license online, by mail or in person anytime within 12 months from the expiration date that is listed on your Michigan driver’s license.
Renewing your driver’s license can be completed using the ExpressSOS online portal so long as you are a United States citizen, your last renewal was completed in person, you do not possess a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you do not possess a temporary license, have not changed your name, are not a registered sex offender and you do not possess a minor restricted license. Online renewals are generally a faster and more convenient way to renew as you can do so from the comfort of your own home. Alternatively, you can also renew by mail so long as you meet the same requirements for online renewals. Should you prefer to renew by mail, the Secretary of State will mail you a renewal notice around 45 days from the date of your driver’s license expiration.
Lastly, you can renew a driver’s license in person at a branch office or Secretary of State office. Along with your driver’s license renewal fee, you will need to bring your current driver’s license or another form of acceptable identification. You will also be asked to complete a vision test and have your new photo taken. If you have legally changed your name since your last driver’s license issuance, you will also be required to provide proof of that name change. Both the Secretary of State offices as well as branch offices accept cash, check, money orders and most credit and debit cards.

However, if you are not eligible for a renewal through either of these methods, you may be able to obtain a special extension permit that will allow you to continue driving up to 180 days from the expiration date displayed on your license. If you are currently an active military personnel that is stationed outside of the state, you can renew by mail, even if you do not meet the usual requirements, so long as your license has not been expired for more than four years.
